Singapore Airlines was the first to introduce long-haul international services to Christchurch with the launch of weekly Boeing 747-200 services. Since then, a number of international carriers have come and gone from the Garden City, but Singapore Airlines remains committed to the region. Along with Singapore Airlines and Halley’s Comet, Christchurch saw other visitors in 1986, including Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, and even Pope John Paul II. But it was Singapore Airlines that became the familiar face to locals. In 1986, the year David Lange was in power, Singapore Airlines was flying 33 aircraft to 51 cities in 34 countries. Now, Singapore Airlines operate 104 aircraft, and along with their regional wing SilkAir, fly to more than 100 destinations in 34 countries worldwide.

November remains the most magical of months, brimming with the infinite possibilities of long days, midsummer nights and early dawns. I hope that a similar sense of enchantment is evident in the new issue of Style. With our theme of meeting the makers of precious jewels, it’s a topic that should certainly make any woman feel a sense of magical possibilities. Our report is on the exciting launch of Tiffany & Co. in New Zealand. We speak with Glen Schlehuber, vice president and managing director of Tiffany & Co. Oceania, and take a step back in time to look at the brand’s rich history. Speaking of high-end jewellery, we have the incredible opportunity to take a tour through Christchurch-born-and-bred Jessica McCormack’s property in Mayfair, London, where she houses her stunning jewellery collection, and also showcase some of her jewels that will be available in New Zealand for the first time. Speaking of gorgeous, we have a chat with Ella Drake, former face of Gucci International and now the designer and founder of Monarc Concierge jewellery. On a more practical note in our home section, we’ve got some great suggestions on how to make your home more environmentally friendly, as well as top sustainable-flooring options. We take a trip on the great American open road, highlighting our top four musttake routes and, with warmer weather on the way, highlight swimwear – retro ’80s style – as this year, it’s all about the once-piece and accessories. Each range contains five essential pieces, which can be worn together in various combinations or easily mixed in with other wardrobe pieces. Sheer genius, saving us all time and money. If you’re seeking something special, take a look at the range of stunning vases from Höglund Art Glass. Situated in Nelson and Cental Otago, couple Ola Höglund and Marie Simberg-Höglund have worked together for more than four decades, creating glass artwork that has earned them worldwide praise and international recognition. We love this blown glass – its colour and form are exquisite. For more, see www.hoglundartglass.com

EXPERiEnCE. Come to lunch at Stoneridge Estate, Queenstown, for a great cause. On November 18, NZ Life & Leisure editor Kate Coughlan will host a special event with Jane Falconer of Clachanburn Country Garden, who will talk about how she created a Garden of National Significance. All proceeds will be donated to Ranui House a home for the patients and family of those undergoing medical treatment at Christchurch hospital. Attendees will also receive ‘Lucy’s Rose’, named after Jane’s granddaughter, who underwent treatment in Christchurch. After much anticipation, St Andrew’s College Chapel has opened. The beautiful structure has been designed by awardwinning architect Patrick Clifford from Architectus, seats 700 people and boasts state-of-the-art acoustics, making it a desirable venue for musical performances. The unusual folded roof reflects Christchurch’s gothic heritage. The chapel will be home to The Village Presbyterian Church (St Stephen’s and St Giles’ parishes) on Sunday mornings and community events will be welcomed. We’re rediscovering our inner disco divas and heading to Dim 7th Jazz and Whisky Bar (363 Lincoln Rd, Addington) December 2nd for Disco Fever. The retro throwback party includes a guest appearance by DJ Zay, a resident DJ from London’s celebrity-filled hotspot Tape. Relive the fun that was the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.

Don’t expect mood lighting and aromatherapy – this is a destination for results-driven treatments that will trick your close-ones into thinking you’ve finally had a full night’s sleep. The clinic offers laser hair removal using medical grade lasers, advanced skin treatments, as well as cosmetic injectables. Have you given your eyelashes and brows all the love they need? Lashform Studio is a new boutique eyelash salon focused on creating the beautiful, lush, healthy lashes you yearn to have. Take some time out and lavish your lashes with the latest treatments and care. We are particularly excited about their Lash Lift / LVL Treatment that lifts, darkens and lengthens your natural lashes.

SPend. We are thrilled to hear that Moochi has just launched a swimwear range. Expected in stores early November, the range features seven unique swimwear pieces, designed with a mix-and-match approach in mind. As would be expected with the classic brand, all the pieces are minimal, contemporary with flattering cuts. One positive effect of the rebuild is the opportunity for Christchurch to up its retail game, and, this month, two cult brands will be making waves in the central city. In the newly built ANZ Building, Mecca Maxima will launch its first New Zealand store (mid-November), a 150m² high-energy beauty emporium that will debut some of the best in global beauty, including iconic brands Urban Decay and Too Faced. Adding to the hype is the soon-to-open Superette. With its collection of top high-fashion brands mixed with casual classics, we’re already making our wish list.

with ella drake

New Zealand designer and founder of Monarc Concierge, Ella Drake, is no stranger to the world of luxury and high fashion. Before launching her jewellery collection, Ella was the face of Gucci International and appeared in Vogue Gioiello (Vogue Italia’s jewellery edition). She later studied at the prestigious Florence campus of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). She speaks with Victoria Tait about the launch of Monarc Concierge into Australia and New Zealand.

wing Me ring by Monarc

What was it about jewellery that inspired you to pursue this as a career path? it was the sentimentalism around jewellery that caught my attention from a young age, that romantic notion that jewellery is most often given as a token of the purest love. later, it was through booking a shoot with Vogue Gioiello (Vogue Italia’s jewellery edition) that really cemented my passion for fine jewellery. I went on to study at the Florence campus of the Gemological institute of america (Gia). i am captivated by gemology and the creation of natural stones. For me jewellery design strikes the perfect balance between romance and science.

How has your experience as an international model influenced your designs? Modelling enabled me to travel around the world and experience a multitude of various cultures, each place with its own aesthetic. i was contracted to Gucci for a period of time, watching from the inside the creative discipline and magic that is spun to actualise a runway collection. Observing behind-the-scenes action at various fashion houses across europe has enabled me to clarify my taste, work ethic and approach to designing for Monarc Concierge. Can you describe the style of your brand Monarc Concierge? i am not one for fast fashion; i’m inspired by heritage and travel. a timeless aesthetic is at the core of the Monarc Concierge brand. . Do you have a favourite piece in the collection? the wing Me ring. it’s such a fun cocktail piece combining delicate lines with a punchy chequerboard onyx stone. i also love the Puzzle ring; it is reminiscent of interlocking friendship designs from the 17th century, but the old-world fuss has been taken out so it strikes a strong, modern look. the Signature huggies are always on rotation in my ears; i switch between the black and white diamond versions. What materials do you love to work with? i really love working with 9ct yellow gold. its golden hue has the slightest touch of cool, moss green that 18ct yellow gold doesn’t have. Gold has a higher density and is stronger than silver, so really delicate styles can be achieved well through the use of gold alloys. alexandrite is a naturally occurring stone with a party trick second to none. Under

natural light it appears bluish green and under incandescent light it swaps to appear red or violet. Is there a current trend you are seeing? One of the trends i’m seeing is the growing tradition that men want to design a ring for a proposal, but don’t want to design the actual engagement ring for this event. we design a lot of “stunt” rings to fit this situation so that the newly engaged couple can later decide on a bespoke ring together. A “save-the-finger ring” is a great idea for proposers who want some input (and credit) but know their other half would prefer some creative input on the final engagement ring. For this reason, “stunt” rings are often more playful in style choice and certainly don’t have to cost the world. Your materials and gemstones are ethically sourced; do you think consumers are more aware of what they are buying? Consumers have a plethora of choice through online shopping. the international jewellery market has become so much more accessible and it can be difficult to wade through so much information. Many consumers remain driven by price and opt to take the path of fashion jewellery, but Monarc Concierge provides something a little different as an independent company. to design and produce using materials mined from terrible circumstances would feel incredibly misaligned with the purpose of the jewellery we create. engagement rings and bespoke keepsakes represent huge emotional investment, i want to ensure Monarc Concierge doesn’t compromise social and environmental justices in order to create extraordinary jewellery.

introducing

Tiffany

With Tiffany & Co. now open in Auckland, Victoria Tait provides an overview of this incredible brand’s history and speaks with Glen Schlehuber, vice president and managing director of Tiffany & Co. Oceania, about what we can expect to see in New Zealand.

Julia nobis

in 1837, 25-year-old charles Lewis tiffany opened a “stationery and fancy goods” in new York city with his school friend John B. Young. The growing business quickly developed a reputation for fine goods, especially Bohemian glass and porcelain, and began the manufacture of its own jewellery. Sixteen years on, charles tiffany took full control of the company, renamed it tiffany & company (1853), and established the firm’s emphasis on jewellery. With natural talent, charles tiffany lead the company through the next 60 years of undeniable success. Tiffany was first recognised at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair, at which the company was awarded the grand prize for silver craftsmanship; a first for an American design house. In 1878, Tiffany acquired one of the world’s largest and finest yellow diamonds. the diamond was cut from 287.42 carats to 128.54 carats with 82 facets, which gave the stone its legendary fire and brilliance. named the tiffany diamond, the stone became an exemplar of tiffany craftsmanship. today and throughout history, tiffany & co has attracted the most prominent members of society from the Vanderbilts and Whitneys to Jacqueline Kennedy onassis and Elizabeth taylor. our modern-day screen stars, such as cate Blanchett, Kate Hudson and Jessica Biel, have been all seen adorned in tiffany diamonds. in 1886, tiffany introduced the engagement ring as we know it today. this famous ring was named the tiffany Setting. it was so popular even a young Franklin Roosevelt purchased a Tiffany engagement ring in 1904. With the death of Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany – a highly skilled artisan – became Tiffany’s first director of design and set up the Tiffany Artistic Jewellery department in the Fifth Avenue store. Glen Schlehuber, vice president and managing director of Tiffany’s oceania, gives us the inside word on all things tiffany today.

How many Tiffany & Co. stores are there now worldwide? there are more than 300 tiffany stores worldwide, with the number growing each month. There are currently nine stores in Australia and, as you know, one in Auckland, New Zealand. What can we expect to see at the New Zealand store? there are many special qualities to the location at Britomart, from the impressive façade and heritage architecture of our building to the grand interior and ceiling height within the store. inside the store, tiffany architects and designers have created a modern and impressive store to showcase an array of renowned tiffany & co. collections. Store highlights include handpainted glass magnolia patterns in the fine and bridal salons. The store will be a significant size and will house a comprehensive selection of our iconic collections, as well as offering luxury customer services. What made now the time to open in New Zealand? Was it difficult to find the right building? We have been looking at the New Zealand market for a number of years as we have very loyal New Zealand customers shopping with us in Australia. For us, it was really a matter of finding the right location and environment for our brand. Britomart represents a great opportunity to place tiffany & co. in a prime location within an environment that exudes energy, style and sophistication – the same qualities that make tiffany & co. the most sought-after luxury brand in the world.

How would you describe the style of a Tiffany woman? the tiffany woman has a spring in her step. She makes her own rules, and she doesn’t conform. Tiffany & Co. is first and foremost modern and makes no apologies for that. It’s for the cool girl about town who’s well-informed and has a handle on what’s happening, what’s now. She’s clever and smart and is very certain of herself and her style. In your opinion, what is a piece every woman should have? i would suggest the tiffany t-Square cuff; it is such an iconic piece of jewellery that will stand the test of time in design and can be worn stacked every day with your existing wardrobe.

How does a jewellery brand maintain its identity for almost 180 years? tiffany has always been a company of great innovators, great dreamers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with design. This frame of mind links directly back to the company’s founder, charles Lewis tiffany, who was an entrepreneur long before anyone even knew what that term meant. He was a risk taker, someone who constantly did things no one else had the courage to try. At tiffany, we carry forward that spirit of risk and vision. Is there a collection you are excited about? tiffany offers such a diverse collection. one of my favourite collections is the tiffany t collection. i enjoy the simple but iconic design of this collection. i also love the tiffany ct60 watch collection. My ct60 has a navy blue dial with a navy blue strap. it is a great-looking timepiece; i get a lot of comments on it.

Can you tell us more about Tiffany & Co.’s sustainability policy? As a leader in the luxury industry, we recognise the opportunity we have to influence culture and set the standards for excellence – not only in fine jewellery and craftsmanship but also in what it means to be a responsible corporate citizen. We have implemented a vertical integration model that gives us a strong chain of custody, direct oversight of our manufacturing and a voice for improving global standards and conditions. Since its inception in 1837, tiffany & co. has been guided by the belief that a successful company has a responsibility to the greater community. The Tiffany & Co. Foundation was established in 2000 to focus the company’s philanthropic endeavours. through its three environment programmes, the tiffany & co. Foundation seeks to preserve the world’s most treasured landscapes and seascapes. Can you tell us about one thing people would be surprised to know about Tiffany & Co.? We have the strictest standards in regards to the manufacturing of our jewellery, which is predominantly manufactured in-house in our workshops in the united States. the fact that tiffany & co. only accepts 0.04% of the world’s gem-grade diamonds means our customers are confident they are getting the best of the best.

Adored by the fashion elite, London-based and Christchurch-born designer Jessica McCormack specialises in diamond jewellery. Now famous for the clever way she merges the contemporary with the classic for an aesthetic that appeals to all women, her fans include an extensive list of high-profile celebrities including Rihanna, Julianne Moore, reese witherspoon, Liv Tyler, Jennifer Connelly and sienna Miller. Her incredible collection is housed in a stunning Mayfair townhouse that was originally a high-end private residence. speaking with Jessica, Style gets a sneak peek into this amazing home and talks to Jessica about what inspires her.

How did you find yourself on this career path? My father owned an auction house in New Zealand, so I grew up surrounded by antiques, art, vintage jewellery and many weird and wonderful things. I gained an appreciation for the old and how to make it fit into modern life. In my early twenties, on a gap year in Morocco, I met someone whose sister-in-law was the head of jewellery at sotheby’s, and he mentioned getting in touch. I wrote to her constantly when I returned to New Zealand until she relented and invited me to intern in London. Coming to London and my time at sotheby’s was a big eye-opener, I was exposed to the most incredible array of historical jewels, seeing russian crown jewels, Lalique, Cartier, suzanne Belperron. I learned about all of it and became obsessed! Where do you get inspiration from? My collections have been inspired by so many things – sailing as a child, Greek Mythology, fairy tales, ’80s video games, snowdrops… the list goes on and on. Georgian and Victorian techniques have also inspired my work and are featured throughout my collections. The Victorian doublet is one of my signature styles – it is a technique where a layer of yellow gold is applied to the back of a white gold or silver piece by hand – and has become an intrinsic part of my design process.

The handcrafted design process is also hugely inspiring; I love seeing a rough stone come to life and having a workshop inhouse allows me to oversee the entire journey from design to the finished piece. Watching the transformation unfold can also ignite a new design idea. Can you tell us about the history of 7 Carlos Place building? The townhouse was built in 1891 by the architect John Evelyn Trollope. The house was originally a high-end private residence and part of the First duke of westminster’s improvements to the area. removing an overcrowded workhouse, among many other things, he completely rebuilt Mount street, creating the beautiful Carlos Place. What refurbishments have been made since you bought it? Everything. we restored the house to its former state and then reworked the entire building. From rescuing the original mosaic flooring to stripping the walls back and restoring the antique wood panelling. we had about 30 workmen on site, to say it was a big job is an understatement. Today it is a magnificent space filled with beauty, and when a client steps through the door, they can relax, and the busy outside pace is replaced with something personal and romantic. It was a huge project and so worth it. What is your favourite room, and why? The library. It has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves along one of the walls, which were purpose-built for the space, to house curiosities and special pieces that I have gathered. There is an old oak desk, large cosy sofa and chairs to hunker down in around the large fireplace. The library is a major source of inspiration because I am such a book fanatic. It also hosts my collection of vintage ceramic dogs and horse figurines, something I have loved since I was a child. There is such a wonderful feeling in this room, almost like a grandfather’s secret office, it is such a nice place to be and the perfect setting to spend time with friends and clients.

Library

Do you have particular features you love? The bookcase. I worked with Nicky dunne at Heywood Hill in London to create a bespoke library for the space; it reflects my passion for jewellery but also for sailing, horse-racing and hounds. There are so many books I wouldn’t have initially chosen for myself: it’s like having a stylist come to dress you, they bring you pieces that you wouldn’t necessarily have chosen for yourself. It is a discovery, and then you end up falling in love.

Did you purposely seek out this type of building or fall in love with it first? I looked at Bond street, dover street, Mount street, but everything felt too commercial and shop-like for me. when I saw this house, it was true love at first sight. What is your most treasured possession in the house? A diamond ring that my husband gave me which had previously belonged to his great-grandfather, who we named one of our sons after. I will hand it down to my son, who will hopefully pass it down the line, too. It has quite a traditional design, so I created a ruby and black gold “diamond Party Jacket” [a ring that encases another with a halo of jewels] for it. It’s one of my most treasured possessions, and I wear it all the time. What would you say is the secret to blending antique and contemporary furniture? In the same way that I encourage clients to mix and style their jewellery and build a jewellery collection, I would say go with your gut and don’t be afraid to mix era or style. Have confidence in pieces you are drawn to and completely love, allow yourself to mix and play with objects in a space. Where would you recommend for interiors shopping in London? I love Nina Campbell’s store in London. she completely captures English style and all of its charm. There is such an amazing selection of furniture and home-wear, her fabrics are really beautiful too. It’s a great place to buy presents for friends and family.

ry

Entrance

Can you tell us about your latest jewellery collection? Most recently we launched a Couture Bridal collection consisting of six engagement rings. our brides want their ring to tell a story and represent their style and personality; they are seeking something a bit different and less traditional. The design of each engagement ring can be created bespoke around different diamonds, from 0.20 carat to 20.00 carats. Each ring design adheres to tradition in one sense – they take a diamond as their starting point. Another recent collection is the diamond Party Jacket. I have been making diamond Party Jackets for my bespoke clients for several years. Many of them would mention that their diamond solitaire rings sat in the safe and it made me feel so sad! The diamond Party Jacket is a concept to breathe new life into ‘forgotten’ jewels – a way to be creative and playful. There are always new additions coming out of the workshop for our existing collections. The great thing about having a workshop in-house is that it allows for new designs to come to life quite spontaneously.

You work primarily with diamonds, can you tell us what it is about diamonds that you love? I find my inspiration in them. Each one has an individual character and personality. I’ll never cease to be amazed by the fact that one of the earth’s hardest materials is also one of its most beautiful. Early memory of jewellery and do you have an heirloom piece? I have a photo of myself and my sister covered in our grandmother’s costume jewellery when we were three and five years old; I don’t know if this triggered something to be realised later. I also always remember fondly my grandmother removing a clip earring to talk on the telephone, which I feel influences me today with my love of a clip-on. I started collecting New Zealand greenstone jewellery with my father in my teenage years and have a large collection of very cherished pieces. From where can your pieces be bought? Until now just at the one place, my townhouse store in Mayfair London. The house offers clients a unique experience when they visit because Mayfair retains the character of a village in the heart of London, which is quite a different experience to Bond street. I also think that jewellery should be sold in a relaxed environment, you need to be able to handle a jewel and try it on to see how it works with the body. The house is an inspiring space full of art sourced from all over the world. It is a collector’s space, constantly evolving and mutating into something new. I love mixing eras and genres. Art within the house sits comfortably alongside the jewellery. we want

Excitingly we are about to work with the simon James Concept store in Auckland on a pop-up, so for a period there will be another location in the world where my pieces can be purchased. How would you describe your own style? I like to keep things quite minimal, not overly complicated or fussy. A crisp white shirt, jeans, amazing heels and diamonds – that’s pretty much my perfect outfit. But I am also an ‘old-world’ girl at heart and love the idea of dressing up. Pick a Playhouse

Get adventurous This fantasy playhouse in Inniswood Metro Gardens, Ohio, is set for adventure. Having everything a little off-centre means you can create a quirky and fun design. The addition of play equipment keeps children busy for hours, while the two levels make for an ideal lookout.

In recent years playhouses have been taken from the simple to the extreme. Tamara Ecclestone (British model, socialite and daughter of billionaire Formula One chief executive Bernie Ecclestone) created a lavish replica of her $119 million, 57-room family home in Kensington, West London, for her daughter Sophia. The mini playhouse cost a small $17,000. At the extreme end of the scale, the Beckhams recently forked out $2.5 million for Harper’s dream castle playhouse. At Style we like to keep it a little more real and have picked out our top playhouse design ideas, from ready-made to DIY, these playhouses will ensure your little one can still use their imagination to make their home their own.

Match your environment If you have a contemporary style home, a cute little cottage for a playhouse might look out of place. We love this Discovery Pod Playhouse – it’s not only appealing as a backyard fort, but includes an eco-friendly rooftop garden that can teach them about sustainability from a young age. For parents who are lovers of modern art, the building is clearly a take on Piet Mondrian’s famous artwork Tableau.

Pick a Perfect location

it’s PlaytiMe!

The location of your playhouse is just as important as the house itself. Ensure you pick an area that creates a sanctuary for your little ones – a place in which they can let their imagination run wild. This Charleston-style playhouse, with its picket-fence entrance, adds little bit of intrigue.

You cannot by pass the opportunity for your little ones to experience the joy of hours of pretend play and imagination with one of these adorable little cottages. These fabulous cubby houses in the style of mini cottages are locally made in Christchurch from quality timber products. Small but effective Continue eco-friendly elements throughout your home in any small way you can, including swapping standard light bulbs for led lighting. if you’re building, make sure you plan effective lighting solutions from the beginning. talk to lighting experts who understand lighting system trends and who will ensure you choose quality led products that will emphasise features of your interior, such as timber and fabrics, and reduce glare. if you’re prone to leaving the lights on in the house, opt for motion-sensor lights to reduce wasted energy.

natural flooring With all of the foot traffic that takes place in a home, flooring needs to be tough enough to take a good few knocks, spills and dirt, but earth-friendly flooring doesn’t mean bland and boring. There are many durable flooring options, which have both underfoot comfort and style qualities, as well as the ability to beautify your space. think smooth pebble tiles, terrazzo and concrete, linoleum, bamboo, cork, reclaimed wood and glass. clean burning Combine heat and beauty by embracing biofuel fires, an attractive compliment to your indoor or outdoor space. a clean alternative to log and gas fires, a biofuel fire doesn’t produce smoke, ash or embers and nor require a flue or chimney. Quality and stylish designs means you can easily match a product to accommodate your lifestyle and living quarters.

ECO Flooring With more of us seeking eco-friendly materials for our homes, manufacturers have caught on and started offering many beautiful options. We have assembled a guide to the most stylish eco-flooring solutions.

Glass Tiles

Made from recycled glass bottles, this renewable source is fast becoming a fantastic option for walls and floors within bathrooms and kitchens. Glass shares the similar benefits of other eco-friendly materials – it won’t host mildew or mould in damp environments, it is easy to maintain, and won’t stain. Glass tiles come in a vast array of colours, patterns and finishes, making them suitable for most design schemes.

Polished Concrete

On trend for some time now, polished concrete offers a cool industrial look. There are many options, including; colour tinting, creating a tiled effect with different colours, or inlaying other materials, including wood and glass. The design possibilities are endless. Concrete is extremely durable, easy to clean and never needs to be replaced.

Wool Carpet

In our Christchurch climate, carpet is often a must for upstairs rooms. However, the issue is that carpet has typically been made using compounds that are toxic and harmful to the environment, as well as our health. Wool carpet offers an eco-friendly option; it was one of the first materials to be used as flooring. The feel is very luxurious and warm in winter, and very durable.

Reclaimed Hardwood

If you want a traditional hardwood flooring, then consider reclaimed wood. This reuses existing wood from trees that were chopped down long ago. Salvaged wood flooring is not hard to find in Christchurch, with many companies now set up to purely sell debris from demolished buildings. Deforestation is currently a primary environment concern, so it’s best that we use what’s already available.

Bamboo Flooring

This is another excellent environmentallyfriendly option for a wood flooring. Although bamboo is a grass, it has similar characteristics to hardwood. It is durable, easy to maintain and is easy to install. Bamboo is very sustainable, the plant takes only three to five years to mature, unlike hardwood that takes at least 20. While usually very light in colour, it is now available in many hues that will work in any setting or décor. Its varied grains and wide array of colours give it an edge over traditional flooring.

out-of-this-world flooring Venus Flooring’s collections contain high quality products sourced from sustainable producers, which ensures their flooring options are not only beautiful but long-lasting and durable. “We emphasise gorgeous designs while also understand the importance of using sustainable products that are truly hard-wearing and do not compromise on beauty or aesthetics,” owner Cherry He says. You will be amazed at the range of options and wide array of colour. From the classic range, with its many colour options, through to the brushed strand collection that boasts both dark colours and a beautiful contemporary white, there is something for every taste. The ancient collection, with its changing grain brings out the bamboo’s true character, while the stain sand bamboo range will give you a high-shine effect. The team at Venus Flooring are highly knowledgeable and can guide you in the right direction, as well as offer installation. Bamboo flooring is ideal for our climate and offers a great option when looking for eco-friendly flooring.

The ArT In Climate Control When rebuilding or renovating, adding climate-control systems can change the flow and design of room for better or worse. Take time to step back and think of your heating and cooling systems as an enchantment to a room, rather than a necessity; this will quickly change what styles and designs you look for. We’ve selected some stylish options to start the process.

integrate Your Design In this Melbourne property, the owners decided to use flat panel radiators and a trench convector in the living area to complement the home’s modern and contemporary décor. The trench convector has been finished with a custom-made timber floor grill to match the flooring, thus providing a seamless and integrated look. By making a feature out of an essential construction element this home now has a point of difference.

electric Fans

Designer radiators

An electric fan can add a touch of old-school cool to a room while also providing an efficient heating-cooling system. For a sleek contemporary look try a bladeless room fan – an excellent option if you have young children – or opt for a vintage-inspired room fan. A ceiling fan can add a character detail to a room as well as providing much-needed cool air in the summer months.

There are so many options now for contemporary radiators that make an impact and statement in any room. We love this practical heating option that stands out as a piece of art on the wall as well as functioning as a multipurpose shelf.

John Parker: CErAMIC ArTIsT, CrAFTsMAN & ArTIsT Anne Hudson explores the fantastic art installation of new Zealand’s contemporary artist John Parker. John Parker, one of New Zealand’s leading ceramic artists, has been making pottery for 50 years. A theatre set designer, too, he often stages his exhibitions theatrically. Te Uru Gallery in Titirangi, Auckland, recently held an impressive retrospective of his work that included and exciting new installation Cause and Effect. Of grooved cone shapes precariously jutting out from the wall, glazed in his signature white, his latest work takes on several new dimensions when lit. The colours change, as do the shadows, and the forms seem to alter as well. Like his previous installation Gravity, the work is displayed on a wall. Collectors can purchase the work in components and create their own installation. This large wall work is a testament to Parker’s artistic flare, his design skills and his craftsmanship. All Parker’s work is hand-made on a

pottery wheel. He carefully trims or carves grooves into the clay, thus enhancing the form reflecting light and creating shadow adding another dimension. You only have to have watched The Great Pottery Throw Down on TV or tried the craft yourself to know the time this skill takes to perfect. Parker is a master of glaze technology. You won’t see him stoking the wood kiln or throwing salt into the mix. His glazes are carefully designed to produce the desired effect and are the result of careful testing and trialling. Much of his work has a modernist quality influenced by the European styles of Bauhaus rather than the more oriental approach of Bernard Leach. The lines are clean and almost geometric. Glazing is often simply black or white, but he does play with crackled surfaces and volcanic glazes. However, the simple base form does not compete but rather compliments.

Parker’s work is very collectable. It is not functional in the domestic sense, but a group of his vases, or shapes either on a shelf or arranged on a wall serve as a source of pleasure. The shapes are pleasing and catch the eye. His work lends itself to contemporary interiors. This potter has definitely crossed any perceived craft/art boundaries. Parker’s work takes time to make; his mark is evident in each stage of the process. It is within this risky enterprise full of unexpected outcomes that his works produce consistently pleasing aesthetic forms. French poet Paul Valéry said the artist “takes his body with him”. I am sure Parker would agree with this. John Parker is represented in galleries throughout the country including Form Gallery, Christchurch. His Gravity installation was also included in the Barn Gallery at Art in a Garden last month.

Perfect PAvINg

Ag tha wh

Landscape architect Craig Wilson gives us the inside word on how to achieve a perfect and functional outdoor paved area.

Landscape projects can be broken down into two distinct components – the hardscape and the softscape. The hardscape is the built elements while the softscape is the plants and soils. The hardscape component will typically be the largest proportion of the project expense so careful consideration to design and material specifications is critical to the success of your endeavours. An essential part of the hardscape will be your choices around hardstanding or paved areas. The options around these are many, so before you choose the final product you may consider the following pointers. Firstly make sure the design of the area will meet your requirements. Often I notice paving or deck areas to be used for outdoor living are too small for their intended use. This can be difficult to remedy at a later date. Consider how your outdoor furniture choice will impact on an area’s useability. Popular modular outdoor furniture is

flexible in its configuration but does tend to be quite bulky and swallow up a lot of space. Look carefully at if there’s room to house furniture and comfortably walk around your space. Once you’ve got the space working well, you can select your paving surface treatments to set the aesthetic you’re looking to create. The options range from beautiful natural stone paving to precast concrete units. Your project budget may be a significant part of your final selection. The cost is determined by the quantities involved, the expense of the product and how it will be installed. Don’t overlook the slip resistance of your selected paving. Some pavers are plain dangerous in the wet or frost while others will offer a good degree of natural grip, meeting the NZBC requirements. You may also want to consider how the product feels in bare feet if you’re creating a more relaxed area.

As pot cre the

Fro

Ag flat adv fen

Th for to

Once your product selection has been made, the performance and durability of your paving will be determined by how well it has been laid. All paving requires correct falls and drainage to deal with rainfall. It’s also critical that paving is laid at correct levels beside your house exterior. With good planning and implementation, your paving will be an asset that both looks good and performs well for years, while providing an excellent surface for family and friends to enjoy your company and hospitality.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS with Tim Goom

GOOM LANDSCAPES: Don’t take ofFence Your fence creates the first impression of your property, so it is worthwhile investing in a well designed fence, constructed of quality materials which perfectly offset your home. A good fence should lend something to both your street and your home. Rather than creating the impression of a fortress, a fence should retain its functionality whilst working in symbiotically with the space on either side. • Permanent material fences whether constructed of stone, schist, brick or block and plaster may be more costly to construct, but will create a lasting low maintenance feature.

As well as protecting your privacy, fencing protects from wind and noise (and potentially your neighbour’s questionable choice in house colour!). Fencing can create a microclimate, so whilst plants might be afforded protection from wind, they may require more watering.

A good fence must begin with a stable base, especially in our seismic city. On the flat in Christchurch, loam and poor drainage may present challenges. Site specific advice is recommended to calculate the appropriate depth of excavation for fence posts and whether drainage should be installed to protect the footing.

• Boundary plantings can provide year round screening. The traditional hedge remains a cost effective fencing option, however landscapers are getting creative with different varieties, heights and textures to create interesting visual contrasts. If you like the idea of planting fences but require greater security to contain pets (or adventurous toddlers!) plantings in front of a chain mail fence will tick both boxes, the plants will grow through the fence, camouflaging it, to maintain the aesthetic.

Materials

Design

There are many fencing materials available. Alternatively cleverly planted shrubs, for example with varying clusters of height, can provide an interesting alternative to traditional hardscape fencing.

Fencing design is as much about location and configuration as it is about height and detailing. You can maximise the usable space on your section with clever design.

From the bottom up…

• Wood has the benefit of a natural appearance and is very versatile. It can be adapted to many different designs, can be used to create curves and be painted and stained different colours. The durability of your wooden fence will be determined by how well it is maintained. A poorly maintained wooden fence will be susceptible to rot. Ensure sufficient space between plants and the fence to allow access for periodic maintenance and painting/staining. • Vinyl fencing has minimal maintenance requirements and is cost effective, with an increasing colour range available. • Metal fencing options include wrought iron, aluminium and steel and have the advantage of being very low maintenance. Wrought iron works well with traditional homes whereas aluminium and steel will create a sleek modern look.

There is increasing emphasis on security and technology - security cameras and automated gates can be discreetly included in your fencing design. The placement of your pedestrian gate or letter box should also be considered. Open fences (such as lattice or picket fencing) filter sunlight and views without full obstruction. The use of climbers clambering up fences softens the hardscaping whilst providing contrast. If you don’t want to commit to growing a climber on your fence permanently- opt for annuals or climbers grown in containers so you can remove for maintenance, then reinstall. Adding caps and edges to your fences will give a finished and defined look. Your Landscape architect will be able to advise on any resource or building consents which may be required for your fence construction. Don’t sit on the fence! Call Goom Landscapes today to discuss the best fencing options for your home, your site and your life space!

40 Style | rebuild

Victoria Street Taking a look at Victoria Street with fresh eyes, Victoria Tait looks at the past, present and future of the area.

If you want to feel good about living in Christchurch, I would recommend a stroll down Victoria Street. Due to the street being largely owned by independent developers, it was one of the first off the mark to be rebuilt and in spectacular fashion. If Victoria Street could set the standard for the rest of Christchurch, we would be living in an architecturally renowned city. Victoria Street was originally named Whately road, after the Archbishop of Dublin, richard Whately, who was a member of the Canterbury Association. It was later renamed Victoria Street after Queen Victoria and formed a major route to the north towards Papanui and beyond. In 1988, Victoria Street was stopped at Kilmore and Durham streets when Parkroyal Hotel – later Crowne Plaza – was built. there was a lot of public protest at the time. the Crowne Plaza was demolished after the Caternbury earthquakes, and there was mention of the road being restored, however, the idea never turned into reality.

Duncan Cotterill Courtyard by Map Architects

throughout the decades Victoria Street has always been a bustling hub for eateries, retail stores and corporate offices. You might recall some of the following pre-quakes: the BDM Building with the New York Steakhouse; the old Carlton Butchery with the likes of The Daily Bagel and gourmet fish and chip shop; the Pacific Brands Building and Strategy House. All of this seems to be but memories from another time and place. the post-quake Victoria Street is one area in Christchurch that now offers more than it ever has. From the striking architecture of the Duncan Cotterill Plaza – creating a sleek financial hub – to the rebuilt Carlton Butchery building, which has managed to retain some of its old-world charms. the street is now becoming known for its host of interiors shops, from Belle Interiors to the more recent Cavit&Co. If you are feeling down about the progress of the rebuild, take a wander down Victoria Street with your iPad and click on Google Maps’ street view history. I can assure you, you’ll be amazed at how far we have come.

The GreaT american Road TRip There is something about driving a 1970s’ convertible Cadillac, with the wind in your hair on the American open road. We’ve selected some of our top American roadies. worDS vIctorIa taIt

ROUTE 66: Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California route 66 is the most famous of all the american roads. The journey takes you through spectacular desert scenery and a host of truly american attractions, including The Big Texan Steak ranch – not for the faint-hearted and famous for its 72oz Steak challenge – or stop off at Shea’s Gas Station in Springfield, Roy’s Diner and the Jack rabbit Trading Post in Joseph, arizona. The road ends in the fine breeze of the Santa Monica Pier.

HIGHWAY 1: Miami to Key West, Florida This stunning drive takes you far away from the hustle and bustle of miami towards the Florida Keys that sit serenely in the caribbean Sea. This is hemingway country, where he spent so many years writing. The Keys also once lured pirates from the caribbean to its chain of islands and more recently, snorkellers and deep-sea fishermen. Phase two, that will get rolled out early next year, will give our customers the option to access the dream station from the comfort of their homes, accessing sightseeing options to add to their existing booking.

What has been the most rewarding travel experience the team has put together? We had a situation where our client was booked to attend a wedding as best man, on the day his flight arrived into Los Angeles. Due to an early morning airline cancellation, he was left stranded at Christchurch International Airport. The airline was insistent that he be rerouted via Melbourne with an overnight stay. After hours of trying to get himself rebooked, he phoned us in a panic. We were immediately on the phone to our airline representative, and, after much perseverance, managed to get him to be rerouted and onto the next available direct flight. He arrived just in time for the wedding reception and was able to give his speech! How much travel do the agents do themselves? Our agents travel a minimum of once a year, if not more. In the past 12 months, our team of five have been to Canada,

USA, Fiji, Tahiti, Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Bali, Japan, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand, England, Croatia, and Czech Republic. In these trips, we see numerous hotels as well as experience all the sights of the destination, giving us the latest updated information for our clients which is shared amongst the team. To where should we be planning our next holiday? Europe is hot at the moment. Fares have never been lower with new airlines entering the New Zealand market forcing fierce competition. There are 15 airlines to choose from when travelling to Europe. Business class has dropped in price by 17% this year. I’ve also seen some fabulous cruise pricing through the Mediterranean and Baltic areas. With the excellent exchange rates out there at the moment, it’s a great time to book your holiday and have an exciting trip to look forward to for winter 2017.

Eric Cormack, the Function Centre Manager at Christchurch’s iconic Riccarton Park, knows his team can deliver the results you need. “We are not just one venue. We can provide a variety of venues, we’ve got six to select from depending on the size and the style. “There are some unique venues, such as the Show Gate, that’s an older style venue that has some character, through to the Tea House, an historical building built in 1903, which has been fully restored.” For larger conferences, the modern Club Stand offers 17 rooms over three levels. “The versatility of Riccarton Park means there is a lot to choose from, and our ability to cater from 40 guests through to 450 gives additional scope to event planners.” Park-like surroundings encourage guests outdoors, but there’s always a wet-weather contingency plan on hand. Citroën

Citroën doesn’t disappoint with the design of the new DS5, Ross Kiddie reports.

Not only do French automobile-manufacturing companies build their vehicles with a lot panache and style, but such is the way their designs turn out it’s hard to classify some into definite categories. Take the Citroën DS5, for example; well, actually the DS series is marketed independently from Citroën, but its coupe-like body shape is so avant-garde it could well be classified as a station wagon (estate) or even a sport utility vehicle. That is something the manufacturers would want. European designs are different, some work in terms of aesthetics and appeal, some don’t. In the case of the DS5 I think you could say the shape definitely works, it is an elegant, classy crossover vehicle and it has functionality and practicality built into it as well. The DS5 lands here at $64,990; it isn’t a budget car, but you do get a lot of car for the money. For one it is loaded with features, and it is built with a plush, comfortable environment that looks after five adults with ease. Major features of note include full leather trim, electrically operated and heated front seats, three-part panoramic roof, satellite navigation and a host of electronic features for convenience and safety. Under the bonnet sits a 2-litre turbocharged diesel engine. It is an engine that epitomises the European way of engine manufacture, it is strongly boosted low down, which provides a dynamic driving experience. Maximum power of 133kW is delivered at just 3750rpm, while a huge flow of torque from as low as 2000rpm is rated at 400Nm. Such are generous outputs, the DS5 will scorch to 100km/h from a standstill in 9.9sec and will make a highway overtake in 4.8sec (80km/h to 120km/h). Drive is sent through a traditional six-speed automatic

transmission. Citroën has long adopted this type of driveline and as its experience shows, the DS5 has a power plant that is smooth and decisive. It’s so unflustered in its delivery that you are hard pressed to remember it is diesel-fed, and when the turbocharger is delivering its impetus the feel of acceleration is quite rewarding. Not that this comes with a fuel-usage cost. Citroën rate the DS5 with a 4.4-litre per 100km (64mpg) combined cycle average, which sits well with the 6.8l/100km (41mpg) figure constantly showing on the vehicle dash display. at 100km/h the engine is turning over very relaxed at just 1500rpm offering a 4.8l/100km (56mpg) instantaneous return. That last comment reinforces my earlier mention of available power, at that speed the engine bursts into life providing strong mid-range acceleration. I took the test car on a long State highway 72 loop from Waddington to the rakaia Gorge. The DS5 cruises effortlessly, there is barely any noise intrusion and it feels so comfortable within the chassis. That’s no surprise, Citroën has long built supple suspension systems and the DS5 is no different. When it comes time to tackle the twists and turns, like those into the gorge, body balance is well controlled. The DS5 sits low at just 1.5m and riding on high-quality, low-profile Michelin Pilot rubber (235/45 x 18in), the DS5 has strong grip at both ends. It also has directional accuracy, which affords the driver a sporty feel. The DS series is marketed with performance as a criteria, which is why I made mention of its uncharacteristic design in the first instance; it is a vehicle which fills multiple roles. I’ve driven two DS cars within the space of a month and I’m looking forward to a drive soon in the DS4 Crossback – another interesting design which once again crosses boundaries.

That aside, the DS5 is a smart piece of kit, and although its price is little on the hefty side, it is a car which will constantly please given the imagination within its design.

GET THE LOOK

Sophie Matthews take us through how best to achieve a classic hot summer look.

tip

You can dry either styles with a diffuser or, for natural movement, let the hair air dry as this will prevent frizzing.

Beach Babe Wave If you have super straight hair that doesn’t curl, this overnight look is perfect for achieving that beachy wave. Step 1 After shampooing hair, liberally spray your hair roots to ends with Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray Beach Look. This will add texture for a messy beach look that adds definition to long and fine hair.

Redken Beach Envy Volume Texturising Shampoo

Step 2 Split off your hair into four sections – two at the back and two at the sides. Twist hair in each section into a small bun to the scalp and secure with bobby pins or hair ties. Make sure your part is where you want it the next day. Step 3 Leave hair up overnight and, in the morning, take it all down and give your hair a shake. The result: beachy waves. Spray more texturiser if needed. tip: Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort Beach Look Spray is my personal fav, it’s like the beach in a jar. If you’re after more hold for thicker hair, use the Hair Resort Gel, also by Kevin Murphy.

Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Beach Texturiser

Beach Envy Volume Wave Aid

Eve Lom Golden Bronzing Powder Mecca Cosmetica Sunscreen

Surfer Scrunched Locks Step 1 Shampoo and condition the hair. I recommend using the new Redken Beach Envy Volume texturising range, which gently cleanse and create amplified, loose, beachy waves with amazing body for all hair types. Step 2 Apply Redken Beach Envy Volume Wave Aid for infusing texture, and scrunch the hair. Take strands of hair and twist the hair, giving the hair more defined curls. Take one hand and grab the bottom of a section of hair and push that hair up until it meets your scalp. Drop and leave.

Time

For TonIng Elly McGuinness gives us two simple bodyweight exercises to get you set for summer. The days are warm; the evenings are light, and it’s the time of year when you may be looking to add something to your fitness regime to feel great for summer. Whether you love playing summer sports, or just want to have more energy, strength and vitality for the season ahead, completing some simple bodyweight exercises on a regular basis can take you closer towards your goals. A few of the benefits of properly executed bodyweight-resistance exercises include improving sports performance, helping to increase muscle tone, and strengthening muscles and bones. The best thing is that these exercises can be done anywhere, with no equipment. There are a number of progression options for each exercise, and ultimately the level that the exercise is performed at will be relevant to the person. If you have any injuries or are new to exercise, please refer to a qualified physiotherapist or personal trainer before trying these exercises. Both of the following exercises are ‘super stars’ in terms of the benefits you can receive from them. They are exercises that reflect movements our bodies are naturally designed to do, and they work all the major muscles in the lower body. You may wish to compliment them with some upper-body exercises once you get into the habit of doing them.

SQUAT Start with feet just outside hip distance and turn them out slightly. Sit back and imagine you are sitting on a chair. You may need to start with a small movement, to maintain your posture, and when you become more advanced, you can work towards getting your thighs parallel to the ground, or even lower. Always ensure you maintain correct postural alignment. From there, push up through the hips to the start position. The chest stays lifted, heels remain on the floor, and knees are in line with feet throughout – if your knees drop inwards it normally means you need to squeeze your buttocks and/or tighten your abdominals more. Variations can include narrow squats, wide squats, and onelegged squats.

LUnge Start with the feet directly under the hips. Keeping the feet hip distance apart for balance, take a big step forward with one foot and lower into the lunge position. Both feet stay facing forward, and the back heel is lifted. Lower until the back knee is just off the ground (or start with a small movement as needed). Then push off the front leg using the thigh muscles and buttocks so that you are back in the start position. This type of lunge is called a ‘power lunge’. other variations include stepping back or to the side into your lunge, instead of forward. You could also perform a ‘static’ lunge, where both feet remain fixed in the lunge position throughout (i.e. there is no stepping into the lunge). • Warm up for 5 minutes (e.g. by going for a walk or a jog) before completing these exercises • Keep your abdominals strong and breath continuously • Start with 10-15 repetitions of each exercise. Repeat for two sets if you are feeling energetic • Always refer to a qualified exercise professional for advice on technique and to determine an appropriate progression for your individual fitness level

Q & A with James Stapley

FRAncescA’s ITALIAn KITcHen Francesca’s Italian Kitchen provides excellent, affordable Italian food. Located in Wanaka and now Christchurch, Francesca’s have a woodfired pizza oven, and strive to create authentic Italian pizzas and classic dishes from across Italy. Style talks to executive chef and part-owner James Stapley about his love of food from the boot-shaped region, and he shares with us one of his favourite recipes.

What led you down this career path? I started as an apprentice at the Park Lane Hilton in London at the age of 16, 24 years ago. I loved being a chef straight away and I have never done anything else. How would you describe your style of cooking? At Francesca’s we do rustic Italian food, we concentrate on really good ingredients and serve them simply; I have always loved the simplicity and honesty of Italian food. My background has all been high-end fine dining, but I think the same principles apply to all types of food. What is one thing every meal should be? Great ingredients, well executed, well seasoned.

ToP THRee

Francesca’s Italian Kitchen’s most popular dishes at the moment 1 polenta fries

with truffle aioli

2 house-made potato gnocchi

braised beef cheeks, gremolata and pecorino

3 Tiramisu

with house-made mascarpone

What is your favourite meal on the restaurant menu? I love the hand-made beetroot agnolotti with nut brown butter, sage and pecorino. What kitchen tool could you not be without? The Thermomix. Do you have a favourite ingredient? Garlic, in all forms. What would be your “last request” dish? I had a dish called cacio e pepe in Rome. It had three types of aged pecorino, fresh linguini, cracked pepper and butter. It’s so simple yet surprisingly difficult to get the balance perfect; I had an amazing version of this that has been on my mind ever since.

ingredientS: PAStA dough 600g ‘00’ Flour 6 free-range eggs 1½ tsp salt 3 Tbsp olive oil

– First, make your Fresh pasta dough –

method On a bench, make a well with the flour. In a bowl, whisk the eggs with the salt and the olive oil and then add to the flour well. Use a fork to work the eggs into the flour until it forms a dough. Knead the dough for 15-20 minutes. Cover with cling film and refrigerate for 1 hour minimum, or overnight if you want to make it the next day. ingredientS: Filling 5 medium beets 3 cloves of garlic (peeled and crushed to a puree) 50g goat’s cheese – 100g Reggiano, finely grated then, make 5g salt, 2g cracked black pepper the Filling 8g sugar – 25g breadcrumbs 20 large, fresh basil leaves, chopped ingredientS: nut Brown SAge Butter 1 cup of freshly picked sage leaves 250g salted butter 1 Tbsp poppy seeds method Roast the beetroot in foil at 180°C for 45 minutes. Allow to cool then peel. Add the cooled beets to a blender together with all of the other ingredients and blend until very smooth, 30 seconds-1 minute. Cook the butter and sage in a saucepan, stirring all the time, over a low to medium heat, until the butter is nut brown in colour and smells nutty, and the sage is crispy. Set aside until needed. to ASSemBle Using a pasta machine, roll the pasta dough to the thinnest setting so that you have a long, thin strip of pasta. Put the beetroot mix into a piping bag. Pipe the beetroot mix all the way down the length of the pasta strip. Brush one length of the pasta with a little water so it will stick together and then roll it over onto itself so that it resembles a ‘sausage roll’ shape. Use a small piece of dowling to make indentations along the filled strip to divide it into small pieces. Run a knife to cut along the divides and make a little agnolotti shape. Cook for 3 minutes, in boiling salted water. While the pasta is cooking warm the sage butter through and finish with the poppy seeds just before you remove the pan from the heat. Place the agnolotti on a serving dish and spoon over the sage butter. Drizzle a small amount of vincotto (or balsamic vinegar) over the top and a light shaving of parmesan cheese, and serve immediately.

local fare

Vanessa Ortynsky tastes some delights at a Christchurch classic. PHOTOGRAPHY Charlie JaCkson The Cashmere Club is situated at the southern end of the city between Colombo Street and the meandering Heathcote/Ōpāwaho River. Riverview Restaurant provides a cheerful and familyfriendly atmosphere with the option of al fresco dining on the spacious covered deck. The local community club is also home to a sports bar, beer gardens and a conference room that caters to weddings and corporate functions. The à la carte menu includes a range of hearty traditional fare, from lamb shanks to chicken stacks. We took advantage of

the diverse range of meat options and chose to create our own surf and turf meal – beginning with green-lipped mussels, followed by ribeye and salmon fillet for the mains. The dozen or so mussels were perfect for sharing being half-shell topped with tomato salsa and finished with a parmesan crust. Shortly after we tucked into the main courses: chargrilled ribeye steak, and pan-seared salmon fillet served with mash and a side of vegetables. I’ve always been delighted at the prospect of combining land and sea in a meal. Living in New Zealand, it’s easy to

take for granted the abundance of fresh and delicious produce available at our fingertips. We are so fortunate to have an extensive range of meat and seafood in the South Island. While you can find surf and turf at just about any mid-range restaurant in North America, nothing compares to Canterbury’s beef and lamb, Marlborough’s mussels and thick salmon steaks. It’s comforting to see a menu that echoes the bountiful offerings of this region. Whenever I’m in the mood for quality dishes that incorporate local produce, I’ll be sure to pop into Riverview Restaurant.

Mrs Dentons is much more than meets the eye. A café, delicatessen, bakery, takeaway and gift shop, the delicious treats in store are just what we need in the lead-up to Christmas. WOrDS viCtoriA tAit PHOTOGrAPHY ChArlie JACkson

Delwyn Denton-Lanauze added a good helping of unique flavour when she took over Pierce’s Bakery 18 months ago, turning the bakery into a café-style delicatessen, known as Mrs Denton’s. With a background in farming and many years spent in the Chatham Islands – where creative cooking skills were a necessity – Delwyn has enjoyed working with food most of her life. She creates seasonal chutneys, pesto and relishes for customers to savour at home, and has produced a tasty new range for Christmas. Thai tomato relish makes for a delicious accompaniment to Christmas Day leftovers, as well as home-made burgers and barbecued meats. A rich raspberry fruit chutney is the perfect addition to picnic

hampers. The top of our list, though, is the cherry, beetroot and pinot noir chutney – an ideal partner to antipasto platters and one that will impress your summer guests. You will also be pleased to know Mrs Denton has produced a scrumptious range of Christmas cakes that are offered in a sugar-free and gluten-free variety and are available now. Lasagne, scalloped potato, tortilla stacks and salads are among the extensive range of deli options available for both lunch and dinner. However, it's the range of homemade pies for which Mrs Dentons has become famous. Delwyn has continued to offer Pierce’s popular pie range alongside Lieber Pies made in Fairlie by Austrian chef, Franz

Lieber. All six hearty varieties of Lieber pies are hand-filled, completely free of any nasty additives or preservatives, and, in Christchurch, can only be found at Mrs Dentons. On top of delicious pie fillings like salmon and bacon and pork belly with crackle, Delwyn often produces her own creative concoctions that include the unique kangaroo, cheese and blueberry pies. “I often bring back kangaroo from my regular visits to Australia, which I just love. We also make 'boil up' pies with mutton, potato and watercress, which are a big hit with customers.” A talented artist, Delwyn will have a new range of her vibrant mixed media artworks on show in store, as well as giftware that includes jewellery by Carole House.

Bayleys Ferrymead OFFice Opening The wet afternoon did nothing to quench the enjoyment when Bayleys Ferrymead opened a brand new office recently. Desolate postearthquake gaps, which sat forlornly along Ferry Road, have been filled with newly built structures of commerce and prosperity. It is to one of these sparkling suites of enterprise that Bayleys has located, placing the real estate needs of Ferrymead in safe and competent hands. Staff mingled with invited guests and clients who then, following the official ceremony, toasted the new hub of operations, wishing Bayleys all the best for the future.

pathway charitaBle grOup Biennial charity auctiOn The delightful clink of cutlery on china and the glint of lamps dancing off the Victorian shop windows set the scene for an evening of dining and entertainment. Shoppers having departed, The Tannery became the venue for the Pathway Charitable Group Biennial Charity Auction. Waiters deftly navigated between tables, arms balancing plates to deliver course after course before the evening’s guest speaker, Nigel Latta, held the company spellbound. Bidding was lively, the fevered excitement eventually calmed, in time for dessert, by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s string quartet. It left one breathless!

Spring is not only the season for blossoms and sneezing, it is also the time of new life. One such life being celebrated was that of Southbase, which was born three years ago. The birthday party for this company took place at the Hagley Oval, the grand pavilion which was created by the skill and strength of Southbase’s staff. Long shafts of twilight made a golden curtain, backlighting the jubilations as guests chatted and trays of good things were proffered by deftly circulating waiters. The evening provided an opportunity for a leader in the rebuild of Christchurch to be recognized and encouraged for the campaign to come.

The elegant world of beauty has a new player in the game of making the world look great. Salon Parlour was heralded with an array of some of the finest catering to ever grace a party. The sun that blazed in sparkled off the large mirrors and brought out the rich lustre of the wood panelling, created a warm ambience which perfectly complimented the models displaying the latest styles of the house. As well as the promise of a perfect pampering, a venue to stage marvellous events is also on offer. Haley Black, Jess Mundy

A wonderful world of art was presented to the people of Christchurch when SCAPE Public Art kicked off in time to liven up the cool and damp spring. Christ’s College provided the venue for the launching ceremony, which took place on a clement October evening. Guests enjoyed a pleasant stroll through the school grounds before meeting old friends and new. Art for all to enjoy was then proclaimed and celebrated with a genteel party, as befits an uplifting undertaking. The city had now become a living gallery, existing in the open world and available to everyone. So enriching.

Summer Charity FaShion Show The gloom of winter was dispelled and the promise of a stylish summer brought closer by the wonders of fine dressing, when clothes to be seen in were on parade at Style Fusion, held at Rydges Latimer. Guests enjoyed preshow drinks with friends as the anticipation for the evening built up, along with the excitement. The doors flew open and at the herald’s call to take their places, the company entered grandly, as if in an operatic procession. The howl of bagpipes signalled the start whereupon, long-limbed models took to the stage in a seemingly never-ending buffet of couture. The recipient charity, Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, would have been very happy with the result, on an evening which no one would forget.

SingaPoRe aiRLineS 30th BiRthday dinneR Three decades ago, the surly skies above Canterbury were joyfully lit by a ray of tropical Asian sunshine penetrating the gloom. The leaden clouds parted to reveal the mighty Boeing 747 approaching Harewood, the brief squeal of rubber on tarmac heralding the end of one journey and the promise of many to follow. In the present and almost to the day, soft caressing evening breezes welcomed guests to the Christchurch Art Gallery which was the venue for a celebratory dinner. The partnership of commerce and travelling pleasure between Singapore and Christchurch was toasted with Singapore Slings and food from the exotic east.

It was the perfect way to end the working week, relaxing with a cooling glass and partaking of luscious nibbles. Congratulations Pip!

Warm wisps of spring air wove a gentle progress along the Avon river, tickling the blossoms and dressing the stage for a perfect evening. Surrounded by this ambience, guests gathered at the Child Cancer Foundation office for an early evening party. The reason for this levity, was the official announcement of the Beads of Courage Ball being renamed to the Sparkle of Hope Ball, to be held next May. Fabulous fare and liquid was passed around for enjoyment whilst the opportunity was taken to acknowledge and thank all those who have supported the ball and Foundation.

A dun coloured miasma stole in from the mean rookeries and alleys, sending a shudder through the souls of Londoners as rumours of murder spread through the metropolis. The foggy crime scene was in fact a century and a half away from the stage of the Isaac Theatre Royal upon which the dark tale of injustice and bloodletting was being enacted by Opera New Zealand. Stephen Sondheim’s musical drama, Sweeney Todd, took the imaginations of the audience on a journey through the nightmarish world of the demon barber and his reign of terror on Victorian Fleet Street. Sweet dreams at bedtime everyone!

Jewellery EtiquEttE

As with all the finer things in life, there is a correct and incorrect to way to wear and act around jewellery. To ensure you don’t have a social hiccup we’ve set out our top 10 rules.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. By Getty images.

ignore the bores who say you can’t mix metals, as it’s now totally acceptable to mix platinum and gold jewellery. it is the same as insisting that you mustn’t wear navy with black, or red with orange. time has changed, and fashions have moved on. You shouldn’t wear a ring on your middle finger; it simply is not done. However, the Duchess of Cambridge used to do this before getting married, so maybe this will change in time. After you give birth, you get a ‘push’ present. You just do, it’s not negotiable. if you are lucky enough to have inherited a set of pearls, wear them. if a necklace and bracelet makes you feel too twinset, have the necklace converted into an ultra chic set of bracelets. Less is more; no one wants to see a Christmas tree walking into the room. Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one piece of jewellery. if you have a tendency towards the eccentric, we suggest removing two or three, check again, then repeat.

Signet rings are for crests – not initials – and should only be worn on the little finger of your non-dominant hand. if you have received a family engagement ring and despise it, you may change the setting, but not the stone. there might be family fallout, but at least you’ll have some bling that you want to look at for the rest of your life. Eternity rings must have diamonds running the whole way around them, hence the name. Remember it’s very improper to announce the size and carat of your diamond. The most refined thing to do is to declare you are completely unaware, even though no one will believe you. Diamonds or other precious gems are not for the daytime – this includes watches. You may only adorn yourself after dusk. Engagement rings are clearly exempt. However, if you are so filthy rich that you own a diamond hairpiece, then we congratulate you and suggest you wear it whenever the hell you like.
